The Reality Guru Attacks Flocabulary Criticizer’s

It appears that many people who do nothing for our inner city students want to criticize the new ways in which they learn. People who do not supply any funding for newer books or school supplies that would assist in a traditional learning method, want to openly criticize the new inventions to get our children out of the ghetto calling it a “mindless education trend”. Tucker Carlson attacked the approaches of the Flocabulary establishment comparing it to a “subprime mortgage-backed securities: Enticing but basically fraudulent”. I still do not understand how an education can be fraudulent. Granted Flocabulary is something that is outside of the norm and many are not used ot it. But the reality is that someone has tried and it is working. Trying something and failing is a lot better than not trying anything at all. If you want to get into what’s fraudulent that’s fine we can examine that as well. No books is fraudulent, no teachers is fraudulent, cramped classrooms is fraudulent. But that’s not all, a lack of recess and physical play is fraudulent, not updating the curriculum is fraudulent, not providing an adequate amount of safety is fraudulent.

Point blank, in inner city neighborhoods, education is all our students have to look forward to. Education is their only hope to getting out of their neighborhoods and on to a better life. However, some do not take their education seriously. They rather hang on the corner slinging drugs or work hard at trying to become the next rapper. They find school boring and view it as a necessity rather than a tool. For these students Flocabulary has given them a new foundation. It has showed them that mandatory does not have to be boring. It has shown them that though how stupid they may think they are, they too can be successful. Flocabulary has provided a lot of inner city kids with something to enjoy. It has provided them with something that they can relate to. It has put a smile on their faces and taught them the true meaning of education.

Many distaste the thought of Flocabulary in the classroom. They feel it is absurd and school should be taught in a traditional format. However, if you take a look at these inner city schools, traditional format just isn’t working. These inner city neighborhoods have higher dropout rates, expulsions, failings, and criminal activity. These schools are tagged up with graffiti and scorned with hatred. These students know and see nothing other than failure. Lets not forget the new emphasis that is put on standardized testing. Like a traditional learning method, standardized testing does not fit everyone either. Standardized tests are based on memory of events and time lines, not incorporating the concepts and skills that the students have acquired. So if Flocabulary is going to help these students remember the items we want them to remember for the tests that we tell them determines how much they know, then let the program do just that.

So for all the critiques out there that have a problem with the teaching styles of Flocabulary, get over yourselves. Stop comparing the program to vulgar rapping styles saying that it is promoting violence as that is not the purpose of the method. If you are not going to buy new books for these students, tutor them in the subjects in which they lag, mentor them to teach them something positive within themselves, or provide classes to them and their families to help bring them above the federal poverty line, then it may be best that you keep your opinions to yourselves. Regardless of how you feel about the program, someone is doing a lot more than you are and trying to give these kids a little bit of hope.
