Magnifying Art

By definition art, according to the Oxford University Press, is the expression of creative skill through a visual medium such as painting or sculpture. In my personal opinion art is more than just paintings and sculptures. Art is anything that exemplifies self expression. It can come through the form of music, visual aspects, writing, or theatrical approaches. Art makes a statement. It is unique and individual to its creator; it’s controversial and leaves a lasting impression. Art is any means of administering a lesson. It is inspirational.

The dimensions that shape my definition of art are social, cultural, and professional. My social dimension plays a big factor in what I think is art because people have the right to their freedom of expression. They have a right to promote their beliefs. For some people, art is their way of expressing themselves. They may not have the ability to fully articulate their words, but a brush and piece of paper can express more than words ever can. With any issue in society, not everyone is going to agree with your beliefs and this is where the controversy over art comes into play.

Art is a form of culture. It is the way certain people of a particular social setting or environment view the world. American art is not going to be the same as Chinese art. They may appear similar, they may be displayed in the same galleries, have the same buyers, but they will signify different experiences and environments. They will contain different symbols, and use different mediums. A lot of Chinese visual art consists of flowers, dragons, and scenery whereas a lot of American visual art consists of distorted figures, buildings, and heritage.

For many, art is more than just a hobby. Artists are entrepreneurs that face a lot of criticism over their individuality. For them, it is a career in which they invest a multitude of time and money. It is a lot of creativity and effort. They give their best because their work is constantly on display for the world to see. Artists are rewarded not by compensation, but rather by the gratification of their audience.Visual Art makes up the biggest part of the art industry. It is the traditional method which many people still consider to be the only form of art. “ However, photography and paintings do not provide the full magnification of art.

Spike Lee is an artist. Lee is a producer, writer, and director. He creates films that are not accepted by many figures in the entertainment industry, films about African Americans casted with African Americans. Lee’s films result in controversy not only in the entertainment industry but by it’s viewers as well. They are films that typically depict life in predominantly Africa American communities and illustrate the struggles African Americans face. His movies are educational in the sense that you learn about life outside your own through his movies. Lee is responsible for films like Crooklyn, Clockers, New Jersey Drive, and Miracle at St. Anna(imdb). His movies do not earn much money in the box office due his methods not being widely accepted. Inside Man earned a whopping $88,513,495 and that is exceptionally more than any of his other films, the second most, The Original Kings of Comedy, only earning $13,084,595 (Box Office). When you watch a Spike Lee movie, you will never forget it.

Black Ice, born Lamar Manson, is an artist. He is a slam poet that speaks of societal issues that get overlooked by many political figures as well as minority communities. His inspirational spoken word abilities allowed him to be the “first spoken word artist signed to Def Jam Records” (Wikipedia). When Black Ice speaks, it makes you question the ways of the world. He educates people and inspires them to want to do better, aspire for greater. Black Ice has many poems, “Lone Soldier”, “The Ugly Show”, and “Truth Is” to name a few. His poem “Imagine” is about the issues of self esteem and broken down neighborhoods in the inner city. At one point he states “Cold winters being sheltered by crack houses instead of recreational centers that they claim to not have the paper for to keep open for operation” and “What is he to do when he doesn’t want to do wrong but there’s a lock on the right door” (Def Poetry Jam). These types of artistically spoken statements make you question life and the reason for these problems. Like a Spike Lee movie, you will not forget a Black Ice poem.

  • Now THAT IS what I’d deem an insightful thought on things. What I would advise perhaps is talking to other people involved in the scene and bring to day any different points of view and then update your site or create a new article for us to stew over. Hopefully you’ll take my ideas, I’m looking forward to it! Try to cover off on some graffiti characters as well if you can, they’re quite popular at the moment.

  • You have a new fan! I love your stuff here and will be back again.

    Nancy,

You propsed some great ideas. Not only is the site mine but I do it for my readers so anything they wish to see I try to provide. I will begin working on the research now to gain more insight from insiders. The graffiti scene is very popular right now. I am an urban photographer as well and I love the outside scenery for backdrops, especially graffiti filled buildings. Do you have a particular interest in art at all?

  • I like the layout of your blog. It is really awesome and I’m thinking about a similiar design for my site!

  • What random trivial things do you like?

  • The reality Guru

Thank you Laser. It took me a little while to figure out how to do it exactly and then implement the changes. I honestly had a plain white background and text for almost a year before I changed it. I wish you well with the design of your website and I hope that it proves to be as propserous as you want. When everything is all complete, send me and email at dropmydime@gmail.com so that I can stop by and check it out.

    Dear Travel,

Your question caught me off guard and I really had to think about it for a little while. I am a person that has a protographic memory, so I like things that entrigue my mind. I like things that take critical thinking and a little bit of common sense on top of book sense. Things like puzzles and mysteries most. Those are the only things that I can thing of off the top of my head, But how about yourself?

  • I added you to my rss reader!

  • Has anyone used one of these that and it worked?

  • The reality Guru

    Hi Laser Jamming,

I’m not sure that I understand the question. All of these forms of art are used on a daily basis. You see it when you watch tv, when you pass a billboard, when you read a book. Some, like visual, are more prominent than others, but they are all there.
