Corporate America today is a cruel world. You have issues like the “glass ceiling”, favoritism, no where near qualified family member who needs a job and all the low key unethical work conduct. Everyday you play by all the rules. You come in early and you stay late. You do your job as it says you must. Wake up call, being good on your is no longer enough. You have to do more, you have to do what your are not specifically told to do. Everyday you must go above and beyond the call of duty.
If your company is having a meeting or a get together and you were not specifically told that you had to be there, show up anyway. Though you may think you will not be missed or it wasn’t meant for you, remember they noticed you weren’t there and you were expected to be. Do everything that you can to prove that you are serious about your job. Continue to come in early and stay late. Do not fall into the thinking that your work will speak for itself. You have to show your boss and the rest of the company that you are good at what you do, that you love what you do, and that you are made for the job they have assigned you to do. If you are the researcher and you want that promotion to team leader, you have to perform at the level that is expected of a team leader. Staying in the comfort zone of your current position will not get you noticed.
Become the highlight of your company. Be the one to take the initiative. To take on that extra assignment. Take on that extra responsibility. Set standards and goals for yourself that are reachable and realistic. According to Janet Reid, make sure you are getting the assignments that depict the direction in which the company is going. The last thing you want is to be left out of the loop.
No matter your interest on whether you want to stay at your current company or move on to somewhere else, always have your resume ready. Highlight your most recent achievements in a way that will show your steady upward movement. You want your growth to be obvious to everyone who is looking at your resume. Remember it is the first impression and insight as to who you are and what you can do.
Get out and network. Find those people interested in the same things as you. Find those people that will get you noticed and introduce you to the people that can make things happen. Logging on to social networking web sites can connect you to potential clients, venture capital or your next boss says Latif Lewis.
