Black history is by far the most important part of my life. I am black, I am American and you won’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you come from. As African Americans we have gone through slavery, beatings, the underground railroad, to now having the right to vote and equality to some extent. We have had enormously prestigious leaders like Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr, Michael Douglas, and Malcolm X. We have gone through trials and tribulations like the L.A. Riots of 1965, the Harlem Renaissance, The Civil Rights Movement, the March on Washington, the Beating of Rodney King, and the list could go on. Over the years we have had to show enormous amounts of strength and integrity. We have had to unite as a community and stand up for one another like a family. We have come together to travel through this journey of accomplishments carrying the mental scars for lifetimes to come. So though February is the shortest month of the year, if I might add, it is ours. We have definitely earned and continue to earn it every day. So embrace our victory and use this month, and every other day of the year, to better the life of a brother or sister by doing something positive that will leave a lasting effect. Do something that will make you feel good and proud. Embrace your heritage and live to learn. And like all things past, in the future we to shall overcome.
