For many years we have been dealing with an increase in gang activity as well as gang related violence. There’s this need to be the one in charge, the one controlling an area. These gangs plague our neighborhoods and steal our children. That is not to say that our children do not enter them willingly. but once they are in there is no getting out except through death.
Many people do not know nor understand how gangs evolved into what they are today. Going back more than 100 years we have had various movements to benefit the African American community. We had the Black Panthers, the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X. All of these prestigious black influences were done away with either through imprisonment or assassination. Thus leaving a new generation of young people to find a way and make a way for themselves.
These young people enter gangs for security, a sense of family, a sense of strength and protection. They often join out of something lacking at home. Other times it’s because where they live gang activity is the only thing there so they join out of a feeling of need. Majority of gang members are men. Men who are lacking that positive male influence or presence in the home. Many gang members are a product of a one parent household. That parent having to work more and be home less.
With gang activity still steady on the rise, every state in some form has shifted to address the issues surrounding gang violence. They have committed themselves to taking back the streets. To better our neighborhoods for the children coming up. But it is very important that we all remain educated on why these gangs have sprung up and are taking control. We must determine and understand what is the cause for individual involvement and tackle the issue on an individual basis. Hunting down the various gang ,e,bers and performing operation clean ups is not going to solve the problem. It only leaves the younger members to step up to the plate and replace the member that is now gone. To contribute your help in the proper fight on gang involvement, locate a local organization and give your time and understanding to help contribute in the fight against gangs.
