Employment After Imprisonment

If you have ever been arrested or incarcerated, you know that gaining employment after your release is very hard. The American prison system does not allow much access to opportunities for ex offenders. This post is to provide you with a few resources to aid in getting back into the workforce upon your release.

1) Federal Bonding Program – established in 1996 to give employers the reassurance of positive employment. It allows the employer to purchase an insurance bond that is valid for the first 6 months of employment. It will reimburse the employer for any loss of property etc that they incur by your employment. For more information or to obtain the contact information for your state, visit http://www.bonds4jobs.com/index.html

2) Associated Prisoner Union of America- To my understanding this union is suppose to be a union for past offenders, that enables them to gain employment through a number of union contacts. To gain more information you can write to:

Associated Prisoners Union of America

APAU New Members Department

PO BOx 7893

Northbridge, CA 91327

If you have any trouble, or don’t know exactly what to say or ask for, I have devised a sample letter. You can contact me via the contact for with a valid email address and I will gladly forward you the attachment and you can input your information.

3) Hard2Hire.com- a job search website where many past offenders are able to find work

4) RGIS- A warehousing company that will hire a past offender if they meet certain criteria and is able to perform the job. To apply for a position in your area visit www.rgis.com

5) Seal Your Record- Many states have recognized the difficulty of gaining employment with information on your Cori. As a result they have implemented a system that will allow an offender to seal his/her record. The regulations and requirements vary state to state, and there are certain guidelines involved. However, to gain information on your state, google “seal criminal record in ______” and it will provide you with the information that you need.

There are many options for re entering the workforce, it’s just a matter of finding them. Whatever you do, don’t give up.
