“Freeway” Ricky Ross is known for his notorious drug trafficking in Los Angeles, California during the early 1980″s. He ran a full operation that slowly killed the members of his community through addiction.
What some don’t know is that Ross was an athlete. He was extremely talented in and passionate about Tennis. His dream was to become a professional Tennis player. However, Ross could not read or write and that inability would inhibit him from fulfilling his dream. At that point, Ross entered trade school. It was here, that he was introduced to the drug ring and put in contact with sources to fund his own operation.
After his arrest in 1996 for allegedly trying to purchase over 100 Kilograms of cocaine, Ross became famous nationwide. Journalist Gary Webb, who worked for a local newspaper, did some investigating and wrote numerous articles in regard to Ross’s operation. It has been said, and completely denied by the federal government, that Danilo Blandon and the CIA worked together in a scandal surrounding Iran and Nicaragua. As a result of the 1996 arrest, Ross was convicted and sentenced to life in prison while Blandon got 24 months, a green card, and employment with the DEA.
Now, like I have stated before I don’t in any way support illegal behavior. But behind every bad dead is good intentions. And behind all the negativity we see in regards to “Freeway” Ricky Ross is a man that seen his negative impact on his community and in response turned it around in a way in which he could give back. Ross has overcome obstacles that many dream of. Was he a drug dealer and kingpin, absolutely. But the story of “Freeway” Ricky Ross is one that is bigger than him. The “Freeway” Ricky Ross story is one of society and road blocks. It’s one of corruption and scandal. It depicts the flaws in life that many choose to turn their heads and not recognize.
Ross is a symbol of how someone can intend to live the by the law, get sidetracked, and then overcome to live by the law again. It has been stated that Ricky Ross is currently working on a movie that will take you through the trials of his life. Many don’t agree as they feel it sends the wrong message. But when this movie is produced and hit the stores, I will be one of the first people to buy it!
