Today

Cutting and snipping at the chains
The chains that hold me down
Because society won’t let me come around
But that’s ok cause I’m well grounded

I use my mind to achieve
My common sense you can’t take from me
Because together we
Built this world and that’s how it was founded

I may have been a slave
But due to me the cotton was made
And I watched your children while they played
Need you be reminded

Don’t call me a nigger
Explain how you figure
That because your red that makes you bigger
When the last I checked the world was well rounded

At one point you thought if you went to far you would fall in the ocean
Well were I’m from we’re taught the notion
That if we stick together things will move in a positive motion
Then one day all this negativity will be corroded

I teach my children not to hate
Because as of this date
They can choose their own mate
Regardless of race, class, or creed they are free and not blinded

Blind to the subliminal mind
Of trying to find that inner rhyme
Or the non existent sign
Describing who they are

Because in reality you can look near or far
Either way you will not find
The life that is mine
At the bottom of your goldmine

So check your domain
Because I know my name
Its hanging in that hall of fame
And it says I’m equally righted
