Kwanzaa means “first fruits of the harvest”. It is a celebration of the African American tradition and a common ground for the culture. Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community, and culture. It is used to remind people of their ancestors. Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26th – January 1st and is based on 7 prinicples which are represented by lighting a candle (Kinara – candle holder) everyday. Each day adding one until you reach 7.

Gifts are generally given on the last day of Kwanzaa. Each one being a gift of creativity and artisticness. The less expensive the better as it is not celebrated for the money but the uniqueness. On New Years Eve, everyone partakes in a feast called Kamaru. The Kamaru is a social event where everyone is brought together for the purpose of unity. There is typically entertainment and mounts of red, black, and green decorations. Kwanzaa is not a religious occurnace, but rather one celebrated by all. Often times following a christmas celebration. Kwanzaa is the unity of power and strength.
