For many years there has been numerous debates over the issue of Marijuana use. Many people, primarily those in the medical field, support the idea of medical marijuana. Medical marijuana is the use of marijuana for medical purposes, such as for patients with cancer or AIDS. Marijuana is believed to initiate hunger in chemotherapy and AIDS patients as well as inhibit the need to vomit. Others, primarily users, support the legalization of marijuana use overall. They feel marijuana is a natural substance and causes little to know harm. I have heard time and time again from supporters of legalization that cigarettes are more harmful to a persons health than marijuana will ever be. Is this true? One thing for certain marijuana is just a plant. But so isn’t cocaine and cocaine results in numerous harmful effects. So should cocaine be legalized as well? Or is the typical mentality towards marijuana simply another one sided view of a more deeper complex issue?
Like with any debate there are the oppossers. People have the right to oppose to the idea of legalizing marijuana for more than one reason. Marijuana impairs a persons judgement, lowering their inhibitions. It slows responsiveness, causes distorted perception, plus more. However, alcohol and nicotine result in severe health hazards as well so should they completely illegal? The issue of acceptable drug use is merely one of personal perception and judgement. But do organizations like the DEA and NIDA know better? Are they better equipped to know which drugs will cause nationwide harm or are they just another public entity?
